Air Travel & the Real ID Act

Provided by Rob Taylor

Did you know that depending on where you live, you may need a passport to board a domestic flight in 2018?

The Real ID Act is being fully implemented on January 22. At that moment, residents of some states may need either a passport or a federal ID card to get on a plane. Why? Those states have not yet created state ID cards or driver’s licenses compliant with the Real ID Act’s standards.1

At this writing, here are the states where you may need a passport or a federal ID card to fly as of January 22:

Illinois | Louisiana | Michigan | Missouri | New York | Rhode Island1

Other states have been given an extension through October 10:

Alaska | California | Idaho | Kentucky | Maine | Massachusetts | Minnesota | Montana | New Hampshire | New Jersey | Oklahoma | Oregon | Pennsylvania | South Carolina | Virginia | Washington1

North Dakota has been given an extension through 2020.1

Some non-compliant states are quickly moving to issue state ID cards that are compliant to their residents. Regardless, it might be wise to carry a passport with you as you travel domestically in 2018.
